Meeting Notes
ACR Annual Conference, Atlanta, Georgia
Restorative and Criminal Justice Section
Tri-Chairs:  Jason Ekk, Belinda Reed, Lisa Singh

1.  Welcome and Introductions

2.  Tri-chair Belinda Reed opened the meeting with a brief history of how the tri-chair leadership was developed; reporting on the monthly tri-chair conference calls; acknowledging the writing and distribution of the first RCJ Section Newletter.  Notified members that leadership will remain the same for upcoming year. Governance structure - being a section chair requires a three year commitment and a section election for one chair position will be held next year.  Election to take place in Summer 2010.

3.  Tri-Chair Lisa Singh reported on the upcoming Section Conference that will take place in Dayton, Ohio in May 2010.  Section is partnering with an annual re-entry conference and will host one day of this three day conference.  The Court Section expressed interest in this conference as well.  Discussed possiblity of a two-day advance training at Antioch College.  The Ohio Bar Association will also be a partner in this conference.

3.  Tri-Chair Jason Ekk asked members what the interests are of the section members and what can the section do for the membership?  Three distinct areas ultimately were identified:  clearinghouse for research (to include best practices); identify funding opportunities (include building information on the fiscal advantages of RJ programs); post current and upcoming events (to include media/news on RJ programs).

4.  Everyone in attendance was provided Yahoo Groups information.  Agreed that posting events on Yahoo calendar will increase information exchange among members.

5.  David Deal offered to assist with RCJ Section 2010 Newsletters.   Elise Peterson volunteered to compose an informational piece on Social Networking.

6.  Meeting adjourned.  Attendees:  Joan Packer, Tim Hedeen, Noelle Daoudian, Elise Peterson, Dave Deal, Liz Loescher, Donna Morris, Katie Staton, Daniel Horsey, Jennifer Langdon, Pat McIntosh

ACR Annual Conference, Austin, Texas
Restorative and Criminal Justice Section

1.  Welcome and Introductions

2.  Lisa Singh, Chair of the Section, began the meeting.  We met in a circle - a process fitting to the Restorative Justice Section.
  • Lisa Singh provided an overview of the past year.   Restorative Justice articles were published in ACR’s Journal of Dispute Resolution; Restorative Justice track/pre-conference were part of the 2008 conference.  The Section membership decreased.
  • The budget was discussed.
  • Providing a bi-annual newsletter was discussed and Cheryl Miller volunteered to work on the newsletter.
  • Discussion on whether to insitute a separate Section conference took place.  The members present agreed that maintaining our one day advanced training was best.
  • The possiblity of bringing in an international speaker for the 2009 conference was discussed.  Partnering with the International Section was suggested.
3.  Vote:  Tri-chairs were elected by a consensus vote.  Lisa Singh (Ohio), Jason Ekk (California), and Belinda Reed (Maryland) will represent the Section this year.

The meeting was adjourned.

We had an excellent section meeting and reception at the annual ACR convention in Sacramento.  We elected a new co-chair, Cliff Dorne, and expressed thanks to Linda Harvey, our co-chair for three years.

Following this note will be the minutes from our section meeting.  We have developed a number of goals that we ask you to help us achieve.  Each goal has a point person assigned to implement it, and these are one-year goals.  At next year’s annual meeting in Minneapolis, we will review these goals and give some attention to a review of our mission statement and our overall goals and objectives for the section.  We hope you will join us.

Please contact Cliff Dorne (cdorne@svsu.edu) or Cheryl Swanson (cswanson@uwf.edu) if you would like to work on any aspect of the annual goals listed in the minutes.  We would especially like to invite interesting, informative pieces for our newsletter.  These should be sent to Cheryl or Cliff. Also, please think about submitting a proposal for a presentation at next year’s annual meeting.  We would also like to encourage proposals that focus on international perspectives on restorative justice, but other topics are encouraged as well. And please encourage interested people that you know to join ACR and our section!

That’s all for now.  Thank you for joining us in bringing our section to new heights of success.
Respectfully,

Cliff Dorne
Cheryl Swanson
