- Tri-chair Belinda Reed opened the meeting with a brief history of how the tri-chair leadership was established.
- Governance structure - being a section chair requires a three year commitment and a section election for one chair position will be held next year.
- Outgoing Chair, Lisa Singh, will continue to provide advice and guidance to the current section leadership. Outgoing chair, Jason Ekk stepped down. On behalf of the Section, Belinda Reed acknowledged the work and dedication of each chair and thanked them for their leadership. David Deal and Lois Edmund were nominated as tri-chairs and will serve with Belinda Reed.
3. Section Name
The Spring 2010 Newsletter included an article on whether the name
of the Section should be changed to the “Restorative Justice
Section.” Feedback from members was solicited. This question was
posed to members attending this meeting. Feedback included:
- Dropping “criminal” could exclude/overlook people;
- This Section has criminal justice professionals included in its membership;
- This Section is evolving from “restorative and criminal justice” to “restorative;”
- The primary interest and activities focus on restorative justice;
- Restorative implies lack of competition – criminal implies corrections;
- Restorative is broader than “criminal” – includes schools, criminal justice, etc;
- Most everyone refers to this Section as the “RJ Section.”
4. Activities
This Section co-sponsored Youth Day, Chicago 2010, with the
Education Section. It was a collabortive event that was very
successful. Community Justice Youth Institute’s Robert Spicer
facilitated the opening session and Ora Schub, along with many
Chicago based "Circle Keepers" facilitated the workshops. Tajaé A.
Gaynor, ACR executive committee, was our Youth Day "MC."
CeaseFire presented during lunch. The day ended with a drumming
circle. Our Section is planning on being involved in Youth Day, San
Diego 2011.
Information about our Section’s YAHOO! Group was also provided.
5. Membership
- Discussed reaching out to VOMA- Victim-Offender Mediation Association;
- Direct contact with membership is limited to the annual meeting. Must develop ways to increase contact;
- Membership roster should be assessed. Who are our members, in terms of geography, background, and areas of practice?
