This is intended to be a "hands on" course where you'll actually be doing all that's discussed. The intent is to have you ready to set up your business or fine tune the one you already have. Disability awareness is essential for mediators and others whose professions involve assisting others to resolve conflict. This interactive workshop introduces the ADA Mediation Guidelines and addresses the special needs of people with all types of disabilities including cognitive, physical, and psychiatric. Further enhancing disability awareness and etiquette for those who manage conflict, this workshop also addresses how to accommodate people’s special needs in a dispute resolution setting and how the pre-planning or convening stage can affect the mediation process.

| Leading through Mediation, February 25, 2005 Eckerd College – Leadership Development Institute
Leading Through Mediation is a unique one-day training program designed to teach participants practical, realistic techniques for managing workplace conflict. Underlying the poor performance of others, managers often discover examples of inadequate communication fueled by strained interpersonal relationships. The leadership strategies outlined in this seminar enable managers to mediate differences confidently and efficiently in order to increase organizational productivity. Learning Objectives

Course Description: This course will explore more systematic ways of asking questions that clarify and explore relational and organizational dynamics. You will learn how to develop systemic analyses and hypotheses for case situations and conflict dynamics by applying various elements of family systems theory. The course will explore how the questions we ask shape our thinking, strategies, and options as Ombudspersons, and how the questions we ask constitute, in themselves, interventions. The program will also cover aspects of recent research in social construction, power dynamics, and social anthropology as we consider more effective question-asking models.

Course Description: This course will examine the ombuds role in disentangling very complex cases with a long history, multiple parties across work units, highly sensitive issues, and other complicating factors. We will discuss how seemingly simple cases are transformed into complex situations, including underlying systemic issues, and the role of the ombuds in strategic case handling and surfacing concerns at higher levels. Cases to be analyzed will include parties with overt and covert agendas, involving important relationships, micro-discrimination, safety concerns, and diversity of needs and interests.
