Mediation, Facilitation, Team Building and Conflict Resolution/Negotiation Training

Who we are.
The Institute for Conflict Management (ICM) is a Portland-based, national provider of mediation, facilitation, strategic visioning, and training services. We bring years of experience in managing, presenting, and resolving matters in a thorough, clear, and balanced fashion.

We have provided services to a diverse array of organizations, including public agencies, private companies, trade associations, hospitals, law firms, and universities. As demonstrated over the course of several years and numerous successes, we commit to you our availability to accomplish impartial facilitation on time and within budget. Our record of accomplishments is replete with projects that have enjoyed the confidence of sponsors, stakeholders, and the public.

Our Goal is resolution, not just settlement, where both parties walk away equally unhappy!

Sam Imperati, J.D., Executive Director, has been an attorney for over twenty-nine years, enjoys Martindale Hubble's highest rating, "AV," and has been involved in more than 2,500 matters. Sam was the recipient of the 2007 Oregon Mediation Association, Sid Lezak Award of Excellence for Outstanding Service to the Profession of Mediation in Oregon.  In addition, his peers selected him for inclusion in the 2007 and 2008 editions of The Best Lawyers in America for mediation.

What we do.
At ICM, we provide the following essential services:

Collaborative Services
  • Facilitating Public Policy Issues
  • Mediating Multi-Party Cases
  • Resolving Complex Disputes
  • Systems Design
Training/Presentations
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Negotiation
  • Team Building
  • Diversity

While ICM is well versed in managing the exploration of complicated technical issues, we also work collaboratively with technical professionals to provide a seamless project approach, as is required here.

Our approach.
With ICM’s extensive experience in the intersection of public policy, politics, strategic planning, and law, we have successfully developed an approach and organizational infrastructure that saves time and money. We combine classic facilitation and planning with the results-oriented tools of mediation to help diverse groups reach consensus in a focused exploration of the financial cost-benefits, regulatory landscape, and stakeholder impacts. Our ability to excel in complicated, politicized, high conflict settings comes from years of mediating, in addition to facilitating. We participate in a way that is impartially transparent, technically sound, and easily understood. We will be an enjoyable, creative, and productive part of your project team. We bring insight, creativity, enthusiasm, humor, and a “Get It Done!” attitude to the table. We are nimble, responsive, and get the job done.

Because we are small, we can respond immediately to last-minute work demands. As principal and project manager, Sam Imperati will be fully engaged in personally providing the requested services.
