Geoff Sharp - Trainer
Geoff Sharp has been involved in commercial litigation for the past 18 years both in New Zealand and in Australia, and until the end of 1998 he was a litigation partner with one of New Zealand’s largest commercial litigation practices.
 
He has specialised in contract, securities, banking and commercial property litigation; and in the early 1990’s began to develop a mediation practice, which he eventually left his firm to pursue at the Bar.

He is now a barrister specialising in commercial mediation work and has mediated hundreds of contentious matters over the past 10 years.
 
Geoff is on the advanced panel of LEADR mediators and on the AMINZ panel of specialist mediators.

Geoff is admitted in the following Courts:

Geoff is also the first New Zealand mediator to be elected a fellow of the International Academy of Mediators. The mission of this global Academy is “ to define standards and qualifications for the professional mediator of commercial disputes and to promote the mediation process as the preferred means of resolving disputes”

In January 2003 Geoff was appointed Principal Mediator to the Weathertight Homes Resolution Service, with responsibility for the New Zealand government mediation service and its 20 contract mediators dealing with the ‘leaky building’ crisis in New Zealand.

Other appointments include:
  • December 2007 – appointed to the 2008 adjunct faculty of Pepperdine University School of Law, California teaching at Pepperdine’s Summer Professional Skills Program in Dispute Resolution
  • February 2005 - Appointed as Conciliator to the New Zealand Psychologists Board under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act
  • January 2005 - Appointed to the interview panel of the NZ's Family Court 2005 Mediation Pilot
  • December 2004 - Appointed as mediator to the Health and Disability Commissioner's office
  • 1997/2004 - Board member of LEADR NZ – Lawyers Engaged in Alternative Dispute Resolution, an Australasian association of 1000 lawyers and others involved in mediation
  • 2000/2005 - Member of the New Zealand Law Society Dispute Resolution Committee and chair 06/07
  • 2002/2005 - Contracted by NZ's Department of Building and Housing as Practise Development Adviser to mentor its 62 tenancy mediators throughout the country
  • 2005 - Appointed to LEADR's supervising mediator panel
  • 2006 - Appointed Chair of the New Zealand Law Society Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee
  • 2006 - Appointed to the NZ Domain Name Commissioner's Panel of Mediators to resolve internet .nz domain name disputes
