Geoff Sharp is a commercial mediator and barrister from New Zealand.

After 18 years in the law, and until the late 1990's as a partner of a major NZ commercial law firm, Geoff is now a commercial mediator and has resolved many contentious matters over the last 10 years.

Geoff is regularly requested to mediate complex and hotly debated litigation covering a wide range of subject matter from insurance disputes to historic sexual abuse claims.

Geoff's approach to mediating cases has meant that in 2007 (and a similar pattern is emerging for 2008) over 90% of cases reached resolution - only a handful of cases did not settle.

"
My aim is to conduct the mediation in a manner that complements the litigation process and I hope my reputation is as a proactive mediator who adds value to the negotiation and who is able to assist unyielding parties to settle the most difficult and contentious cases"

1. Geoff has been invited to join the visiting faculty of Pepperdine University Law School. He will teach at Pepperdine's 21st Annual Summer Professional Skills Program in Dispute Resolution for mediators in June 2008.

Geoff is teaching Mediating The Complex Case: An Emphasis on Process Design, Party Management, and Insurance Coverage. Pepperdine University was ranked #1 dispute resolution graduate school in the USA in 2007.

2. Geoff was also recently admitted to the Hong Kong Panel of Mediators maintained by Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and has been accredited by LEADR Australia to the Australian National Mediation Standards that were implemented in January 2008.

3. In April 2008 Geoff was invited to join Europe's new International Mediation Institute as an Independent Standards Commissioner.

Established in late 2007, the IMI is based in The Hague and is set to guide mediation into a true profession on a global scale.  IMI’s founders are the American Arbitration Association/International Center for Dispute Resolution, the Netherlands Mediation Institute and the Singapore Mediation Centre/Singapore International Arbitration Centre.

The core task of the IMI is to establish a set of globally-applicable transparent standards for mediators, to help raise professional practice standards, to enable those who use the services of a mediator to establish that person’s professional competency in advance with a high degree of confidence, and to enhance the standing and therefore the value of professional mediators.
