Philosophy & Approach Definition: Mediation is a process in which parties to a dispute meet with a neutral third party who helps them reach their own agreement. Underlying Principles of Mediation:· The dispute is valid to the disputants · People can generally resolve their own problems; they may have to have help in identifying resources. · If people participate in the process, they have a stake in the outcome. Basic Value of Mediation:· Understanding (not agreement) · Accepting (not trying to change) · Involving (empowering the parties)
