February 6, 2008 Using Venn Diagrams to Create Parenting Plans By Linda Scher Presentation Ms. Scher will speak about using a Venn Diagram approach to discuss decision-making responsibilities and ground rules with parents. The Venn Diagram overlapping circles model helps parents define areas of autonomy and areas of mutual accountability for use in their parenting plans. Saposnek, Ph.D. a Clinical-Child Psychologist and Child Custody Mediator presents an overview of the pertinent child development research that has led to diametrically opposed conclusions as to whether very young children should have overnights with the non-custodial parent. The presenter will offer a synthesis of these opposing conclusions that integrates the research with our personal beliefs, our emotional reactions, and mitigating factors for tackling this problematic issue in everyday mediation practice. As Director of Family Mediation Service of Santa Cruz he managed the Family Court Services for 17 years, and he has mediated over 4,000 custody disputes since 1977. He is the past editor of the Dr. Saposnek is the 2002 recipient of ACR’s John M. Haynes Distinguished Mediator Award, the 2002 recipient of the Monterey Bay Psychological Association’s Outstanding Psychologist Award, and the 2003 recipient of the California Psychological Association’s Award for Distinguished Contribution to Psychology as a Profession.
