Approved mediators have met the following requirements: Training: Approved mediators have completed a minimum of 60 hours of family mediation training which includes either a 30 hour family mediation training course or a 40 hour divorce mediation training course as well as 20 hours of continuing training every two years. Additionally, approved mediators have completed two hours of domestic violence awareness training. Experience: Approved mediators have completed at least 250 hours of face-to-face family mediation in at least 25 different cases. Selecting a Mediator: ACR recommends that you approach hiring a mediator just like you would any other professional (such as a physician, lawyer or accountant). Generally, you should obtain the following information in selecting a mediator:
- Background, education and training of the mediator.
- Experience or knowledge in mediating the type of case you have.
- Fees charged and how the fees are to be divided among all parties.
- The mediator's membership in professional associations.
- Whether the mediator is certified. (Please note that certification is available only in certain states).
